Senior Sunset Photos at Meydenbauer Bay Park, Bellevue WA

I love it when my high school seniors come to their session with a vision. As a Bellevue and Issaquah senior photographer, I get to bring those ideas to life in some of the most beautiful locations in the Pacific Northwest. When Ella’s mom mentioned she was dreaming of a sunset beach senior photo session in Bellevue, Washington, I knew the perfect spot right away.

While Bellevue might not be the first place you think of for beach photos, Meydenbauer Bay Park is truly a hidden gem for Bellevue senior pictures. In the summer months, the sun sets directly over the water, creating the most incredible golden hour glow—perfect for natural, light-filled senior portraits.

Best time for Senior Pictures in Bellevue (Golden Hour tips)

When people talk about golden hour, timing is everything—especially here in the Pacific Northwest. The best time for senior photos in Bellevue and Issaquah depends on your location, the season, and surrounding landscape.

If your session location includes tall trees, hills, or shaded areas (which many Issaquah locations do), we’ll often start earlier to make sure we capture the best light. For this beach session at Meydenbauer Bay, the ideal start time was about an hour to an hour and a half before sunset.

This allows us to capture a full gallery of images—from soft, open shade to that dreamy golden glow right before the sun dips below the horizon.

Senior Photo Outfit Ideas for a Beach Session

One of my favorite parts of the planning process as a Bellevue senior photographer is helping my seniors choose outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like them.

Before every session, I ask my seniors if they have inspiration images (Pinterest boards are amazing for this!). If not, I guide them every step of the way.

For beach senior sessions, I always recommend:

  • Flowy dresses in neutral tones (perfect for movement + light)

  • A second outfit like jeans + a cute top for variety

  • Soft textures and natural colors that complement the scenery

  • Loose waves or natural hairstyles for that effortless coastal look

Ella absolutely nailed this. Her outfits, paired with a gorgeous hydrangea bouquet her mom made, gave her session the most beautiful, coastal, Pacific Northwest vibe.

The evening of the shoot, I was so excited.  The sun was doing its amazing PNW summer thing.  Ella showed up looking cute as can be and right away I knew we were going to have so much fun.  She also brought one of her best friends which I love.  It can make for more comfortable portrait sessions to have someone with you for moral support, and for sure some lasting memories will be made as well!

Why Meydenbauer Bay Park is perfect for Bellevue senior photos

One of the reasons I love shooting senior pictures in Bellevue, WA is the variety of locations we have access to—and Meydenbauer Bay Park is one of the best.

This location offers:

  • A sandy beach with water access

  • Tree-lined walking paths

  • Scenic overlooks with lake views

  • Open shade areas perfect for soft portraits

We started the session in open shade while the sun was still higher, focusing on relaxed walking and standing poses. As the session progressed and the light softened, we moved closer to the water for those golden hour shots.

By the end, we were literally in the water—past our knees—capturing the most magical sunset glow. (And yes… my boots filled with water mid-shoot 😂 but totally worth it for the photos.)

Making senior photo sessions feel natural and fun

One thing I always tell my seniors is: you don’t need to know how to pose—that’s my job.

As an Issaquah and Bellevue senior photographer, I guide you through:

  • Exactly how to stand

  • Where to look

  • What to do with your hands

  • How to create natural expressions

Ella even brought one of her best friends, which I love. Having someone there can make the experience feel more relaxed—and honestly, it becomes part of the memory of senior year.

By the end of every session, that initial nervousness disappears, and that’s when the most natural, genuine smiles come out.

Why I love sunset senior photos

When I was editing Ella’s gallery, I was reminded (again) why I love sunset sessions so much.

The way the light reflects off the water, the warmth of the golden tones, the way light wraps around my senior.

It creates images that feel so timeless.

Ella’s white dress against the soft tones of the beach was absolute perfection. And the reactions from Mom say it all:

“I’m obsessed. Loving these!!”
“In love!! Couldn’t be happier!!”

Senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime season. Investing in professional senior photos in Bellevue or Issaquah means capturing who you are right now in a way that feels natural, elevated, and true to you.

If you’re looking for a senior photographer who will guide you at every step and create an experience that’s just as meaningful as the photos themselves, I would love to work with you. Let’s create something unforgettable.
